borrowing

Our borrowing policies are designed to enable maximum yet equitable use of, and access to, the libraries’ collections. A valid Alberta Law Society Libraries library card is required to borrow and renew library materials. To obtain a library card, you must be a member of the legal profession or a special library. All fines and charges incurred are the responsibility of the card owner. Lost or stolen cards as well as address changes should be reported promptly to the libraries.

Loan Periods

There are few restrictions on what may be borrowed.
Textbooks may be borrowed for 14 days with one 14-day renewal, provided they are not required by another client.
Law reports and periodicals may be borrowed for 7 days with no renewals.
To renew or extend the loan on your books, access My Library Account and click on [Renew] or contact one of our libraries.
Books may be returned to any library in our system.

Holds

Registered clients can place a "hold" on any item in our collections, whether or not it is currently on loan. Placing a hold means that the current borrower will not be able to renew the item beyond the current due date. The client who has placed the hold will be notified by telephone or e-mail when the item is available for pickup.

Holds can be placed online using our online catalogue. Alternatively, hold requests can be made by contacting one of our libraries.

Fees and Borrowing Privileges

To ensure that all clients have equitable access to our resources and to avoid long term retention of books, fees of $1.00 per day are levied on overdue books. Overdue and other library fees should be paid as soon as possible.

Books not returned within 28 days of their due date will be assumed lost. Clients who lose or fail to return books, or who return books in damaged condition, will be levied accumulated overdue fees plus $175.00 to help defray replacements costs.

For all clients, outstanding fees exceeding $49.00 and failure to return overdue or recalled books, will lead to a "block" on the client’s record and suspension of borrowing privileges. Once overdue books have been returned and fees paid, borrowing privileges are restored.

Clients should regularly check the status of their library account to ensure it is in good standing. The online account information always is current. A statement is also mailed to clients at the end of each month.
